Local Democratic Party to Hold Reorganization Convention
The Hardeman County Democratic Party will hold a reorganization convention on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at the Whiteville Community Center. The reorganization will allow the voting delegation to adopt county party bylaws and elect new leadership, while also meeting the requirements of the Tennessee Democratic Party to reorganize every two years.
The open positions include chair, vice-chair, secretary, treasurer, and two executive committee members from each of the nine county commission districts. The last time the party underwent a reorganization was in 2021. Currently holding positions are:
Chair: Randall Rice
Vice-chair: Todd Pulse
Secretary: Tonet Griggs
Treasurer: Mack Carter
Executive Committee members: Larry Austin, Ronald Bass, Andrew Cheairs, Randy Crews, Rhonda Downen, Eunice Gudger, J.P. Hussey, Bethany Miller, Gary Pilkington, Meryl Rice, Collis Spencer, and Willie Spencer.
The Hardeman County Democratic Party has been active in the county for more than 20 years.
“Our main purpose is to promote democratic principles and to elect Democrats to public office,” said Chair Randall Rice, who has been involved with the local party since 2004. “We hope with the reorganization that new, younger leaders will be elected.”
Rice has served with the Hardeman County Democratic Party on the executive committee from 2004 – 2011 and 2019 – 2020, and as chair from 2011 – 2019 and 2021 – 2023. He and his wife, Meryl, are Tennessee Democratic Party Executive Committee members representing State Senate District 26. They are both active in the county through the party along with its other members.
“The party participates in voter registration and encourages all eligible citizens to register to vote. We promote voting in all elections and try to inform the public so they may vote based on accurate information,” said Rice. “We hope to help educate the citizens of the political issues that are current, about candidates for office positions, and the need to vote.”
All Hardeman County Democrats are welcome to attend the County Party Reorganization Convention. Those interested in holding an office are asked to attend the meeting and arrange to be nominated. All offices are two-year terms. Democrats who are residents of and who are registered voters of Hardeman County are urged to attend to discuss the party’s agenda and events for 2023-2024.
The convention will be held at the Whiteville Community Center, 151 Main Street, Whiteville, Tennessee, 38075. Doors open for registration at 9:30 a.m. and the convention will start at 10 a.m. Attendees should arrive early to complete credentialing forms and be admitted to the convention prior to 10 a.m.
