Middleton Recycling Roundup Curbs Litter Pollution in Hardeman County

The Tennessee Environmental Council (TEC) held its first Recycling Roundup in Middleton.

The City of Middleton took a proactive approach to curbing illegal dumping and litter across Tennessee through a partnership with the Tennessee Environmental Council (TEC) that held its first Recycling Roundup ever in Hardeman County. Volunteers were ready and trucks were in position on Saturday, October 5, 2024, for the event that was held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Volunteers were on hand to assist those dropping off items to be recycled.

Residents from the county and surrounding areas, as well as anyone from any distance willing to drive to the area were encouraged to bring electronics, tires, scrap metal, mattresses, food and beverage glass bottles, select Styrofoam, pet supplies, eyeglasses and more. With the request, people responded and kept volunteers busy throughout the hours the roundup was held. The Recycling Roundup was held at Middleton Elementary School where recycling stations, like glass, electronics, etc. so people would know where to place their donated items.

The event was truly a community one with many volunteers coming from the county. City of Middleton Alderwoman Ann Baxter was instrumental in promoting the event and was one of the volunteers, along with several of her family members.

“With a mom who volunteers, they too have to volunteer every once (a lot of times) in a while,” said Ms. Baxter.

Jordan Richter, TEC Field Contractor shared her appreciation to the Middleton community.

“Getting to come and help the Middleton community recycle their hard-to-dispose-of items has been incredibly gratifying. Everyone who came to drop off items was so thankful that we were here to give them the opportunity to clean out things they have been holding onto for years! It feels amazing to know that the people of Middleton came together for this event; it was an absolute delight to work with the volunteers as well! We received lots of tires, mattresses, scrap metal, clothes and other donation items for the Salvation Army, medications, glass, batteries, Styrofoam, medical and pet supplies, and more.,” said Jordan Richter, TEC Field Contractor. “We appreciate all of the amazing members of the community who came out and supported our work, and we are thrilled to be able to offer our support back! We just got approved for the EPA 2.0 grant, so communities are now able to apply for Tennessee Environmental Council to come to them for our 2025 Recycle Roundups. Thank you again for all the hard work and encouragement!”
