Middleton Tigers Basketball Named 2025 Region Runner-Up

The Regional 7-1A Championship for basketball placed the Middleton High School (MHS) Tigers against the Humboldt Vikings in Atwood, Tennessee on Thursday, March 6, 2025. The teams had previously played each other with Humboldt winning each game, so it was a rematch in which the Tigers hoped would end in a victory. At the final buzzer, with a score of 50-55, the Tigers did not achieve the win, and were named the 2025 1A Region 7 Championship Runner-Up.
After the tip-off, Middleton was the first team to put points on the board with the hope of setting the pace of the game. The lead MHS had for a moment was taken by Humboldt after the Vikings tied 9 -9 and then closing out the first quarter leading 12-9. The fast pace of the game brought the second quarter to a close with Humboldt in the lead 24-12.
In the third quarter, the divide between the scores could not seem to get below a twelve-point difference. Humboldt had a skillful rhythm with its passing game. With 4:38 minutes remaining in the third quarter, Jeremiah Woody (#31) scored three points, which was something Middleton needed to see more of on the court. The third quarter closed with Humboldt leading 42-28.
Early in the fourth quarter, there was an 11-point divide, and soon after Jordan Woody (#31) stepped to the free throw line after a Humboldt foul. Jordan Woody made two baskets, bringing the score to 42-33 leaving MHS fans encouraged about the possibility of Middleton winning the game. With 4:50 minutes left in the game, Middleton narrowed the gap to 49-42. MHS basketball coach James Burkley called a timeout with 4:32 minutes remaining in the game and a score of 50-44. Middleton stepped up its game and Humboldt slipped with missed shots at the free throw line. Tamarcus Smith (#5) brought the score to 50-46 with less than four minutes to go, but it was not enough for Middleton to win the game. Despite the many missed shots by Middleton, the Tigers played hard, and it was not an easy victory for the Vikings.
The scores by quarter:
First quarter: 9-12
Second quarter: 12-24
Third quarter: 28-42
Final: 50-55
At the end of the tournament, Middleton Tigers, seniors Kaleb Holmes and Tamarcus Smith, were recognized as being named to the All-Region 7A Tournament Team for 2024/2025. Middleton Lady Tiger Harmony Bell was recognized for being named to the All-Region 7A Tournament Team.
