Obituary: Bruce L. Bennett

Bruce L. Bennett ~ January 28, 1938 – May 13, 2025 (age 87)

Bruce L. Bennett, 87, of Bolivar, passed from this life Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at Bolivar General Hospital.  

He was born the son of the late Harry B. and Dorothy Saxton Bennett in St. Louis where he lived most of his life before coming to Hardeman County approximately 25 years ago. Mr. Bennett was a retired electrical engineer with Union Electric in St. Louis where he worked for 38 years.

Mr. Bennett was a member of Bolivar Methodist Church where he was part of the Methodist Men and, from time to time, taught in Sunday school. He served our country as a member of the Air Force for four years. In his leisure time, Mr. Bennett was an avid reader and enjoyed playing pickle ball. He received his private pilot’s license at Weiss Airport near St. Louis and taught flying safety in the Civil Air Patrol. In his younger years, he enjoyed photography.

Church services were at the Bolivar Methodist Church on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 12 p.m. with Reverend Mark Templeton and Michelle Gooch officiating. The burial was in Grand Junction Cemetery. Shackelford Funeral Directors of Bolivar were in charge of professional arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Marge Bennett, whom he married on June 27, 1959, of Bolivar; two daughters, Laura (Steve) Vargo of Arnold, Missouri and Julie (Pat) O’Bryan of Arlington, Tennessee; four grandchildren, Nick (Kasey Hummel) Vargo, Lauren (Josh) Ketcherside, and Will (Sarra) O’Bryan and Ben O’Bryan; and three great-grandchildren, Isabella Vargo, Owen Ketcherside, and Leela O’Bryan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister and her husband, Lois Ann and Richard Feager.
