Obituary: Ellis Parnell “Dude” Umberger

Ellis Parnell “Dude” Umberger, 81, of Bolivar, was born October 23, 1944 and died at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital on March 5, 2026.

He was survived by his wife, Sandra Marcum Umberger.

Even though Dude was born with only one arm, his mother taught him at an early age that he could do anything that any other person could do.  Growing up he loved fast cars and built his own Trike which he called “Maude”.

Dude retired from Haygood Truck Parts, Truck Pro and Kenworth working as a salesman for 42 years. He attended Grand Junction school.

Chapel services were Noon on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at  Shackelford Funeral Directors in Bolivar with burial in Hebron Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his father, Adam Umberger, mother Edna Clarice Hobson Gaugh and step father, Wiley Gaugh; one brother, Jim Umberger and two nieces, Cheryl Beckett and Ashley Childress and his favorite Boxer, “Samson”.

He is survived by his brother, Oliver Umberger (Gail), sisters, Betty Cox (James) and Mae Wooten (Calvin), brother-in-law, Keith Marcum (Gail), and sister-in-law, Karen Childress.  Nieces, Hallee and Natalie Childress, Kayla Kuroda (Derrick), Kara Grace Marcum, Christy Fields (Jason), Stacey Rico (Shannon), Jennifer Poole, Rebeca Hesselgrove, Abbey Savage, and Carole Laney (Brad), nephews, John Wooten (Evie), Scott Umberger and Kris Marcum and several great nieces and nephews.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Bolivar and loved to work in his garden and watch Tennessee Football.  He also enjoyed sitting with his favorite pet boxer, “Samson”.

Memorial contributions in his name may be sent to the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association.
