Obituary: Gracie Mildred Kirby

Gracie Mildred Kirby ~ December 11, 1939 – August 19, 2023 (age 83)

Gracie Mildred Kirby, a beloved homemaker and caregiver, passed away on August 19, 2023, at the age of 83, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Gracie, born on December 11, 1939, in Hardeman County, Tennessee, dedicated her life to taking care of her family, and providing comfort to others. She lived most of her life in the county.

Gracie led a simple yet fulfilling life. Her kind and gentle nature endeared her to all who knew her. She exemplified the qualities of a fine Christian lady, always showing compassion and love towards others. Mrs. Kirby enjoyed attending the Hatchie Baptist Church at Hornsby. 

Gracie’s unwavering devotion to her family was evident in the care she provided for them throughout the years.  In addition to her role as a homemaker, Gracie also spent some time sitting with the elderly. Her compassionate nature made it easy for her to connect with those in need of companionship and support. 

Outside of her caregiving responsibilities, Gracie found joy in various hobbies and interests. In later life, she enjoyed art, painting, and listening to Gospel singing at Heritage Towers in Henderson where she lived the past 17 years. When looking for some fun, she enjoyed playing bingo with friends.

Gracie was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Wayne Kirby, and her loving son, Gaylon Franklin Kirby. She cherished every moment spent with Gaylon and his memory she held forever cherished and close to her heart. Gracie was born to the late James Monroe Fish and Ida Bell Duncan Fish and had two brothers, who also passed before her, Euel Fish and Leonard Fish.

The memory of Gracie will forever be treasured by Laura (Jerry) Warf, her sister, and Franklin (Peggy) Fish, her brother; step-grandson, Anthony Overton; several nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews whose lives were touched by her kindness, wisdom, and support.

Graveside services will be held in the Hebron Cemetery on Friday, August 25, 2023. Shackelford Funeral Directors of Bolivar is overseeing arrangements.

As we bid farewell to Gracie Mildred Kirby, let us remember the beautiful life she lived. Her legacy of love, kindness, and devotion will continue to inspire all those who were fortunate to have crossed paths with her.
