Obituary: James Howard Powers – Medon, Tennessee

Mr. Powers, age 89, of Medon, departed this life on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.

He was born in Decatur County, Tennessee, the son of the late Dewey Simpson Powers and Virgie Miller Powers. After serving his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War, he moved to Hardeman County where he lived the remainder of his life. On June 18, 1955, he was united in marriage to the Mazie Young who passed away on October 31,
2016, following 61 years of marriage.

Mr. Powers was a retired owner of Powers’ Grocery near Medon, which he and his wife operated for many years. He was a member of the New Union Baptist Church.

Services will be held on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, at 1 p.m. at the Shackelford Funeral Home chapel in Bolivar with Dennis McMahan officiating. Burial will be in New Union Cemetery near Medon.

Mr. Powers leaves his son, James Edward Powers of Medina, Tennessee; one sister, Janette Rhodes of Parsons, Tennessee; one brother, Floyd Powers of Henderson; two grandchildren, Lindsey Kaye Powers and Whitney (Chris) Webb; four step-grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Duke; three brothers, Thomas, Hugh, and Bobby Powers; and a step-son, Thomas Whitman.

Memorials may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee.
