Obituary: James Lee “Jim” Ross
James Lee “Jim” Ross, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and member of the community, passed away at his home in Toone, Tennessee on November 27, 2023. He was born on September 19, 1950, in North Hornell, New York.
Jim dedicated 13 years of his life to the Hardeman County Highway Department before disability altered his path. He took great pride in his work and the contributions he made to his community. His dedication and hard work left a lasting impact on those he served.
Jim will be remembered by his friends and family for his warm and outgoing personality. He never met a stranger and had a special talent for making everyone feel welcome and included. Jim possessed an infectious enthusiasm that brightened the lives of those around him.
Fond memories of Jim will be cherished by his loved ones. Fishing was one of his great passions; it provided him with a sense of peace and joy. Cutting wood was another activity that brought him fulfillment as he embraced nature’s beauty while ensuring warmth for his family. His tractor rides across the farm filled him with contentment and connected him to the land he loved so dearly. Jim also possessed an incredible knack for fixing things – there wasn’t a piece of equipment he couldn’t mend.
Ebenezer Baptist Church held a special place in Jim’s heart; it was a sanctuary where he found solace and spiritual nourishment. His faith was an integral part of his life, guiding him through both trials and triumphs.
In 1979, Jim moved to Hardeman County where he resided for over four decades. Prior to settling down in Tennessee, he spent some time in Florida exploring different avenues.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Rosa Ross, who stood by his side through thick and thin. Their union was a testament to their enduring commitment to one another. Together they created a beautiful family anchored in love and laughter. Their children, Bobbie Jean Ross of Brandon, Mississippi, Brandon Ross of South Bend, Indiana, and David W. Sipes (Sheila) of Toone, will forever hold cherished memories of their father in their hearts.
Family was of utmost importance to Jim. He shared a deep bond with his siblings Sheila Baily, Gerald Ross, Stan Ross, Jeff Ross, John Ross, Joe Ross, Sue Hubby, Suzie VanDeventer, and Eddie Ross. The connections forged through siblinghood were unbreakable and brought immeasurable happiness to his life.
Jim’s legacy will continue through his grandchildren Christie Lynne Sipes (Jason), Patric Sipes (Taylor), Schyler Loper, Waylon Loper, Justin, Lauren and JonJon Campbell, and Eddie Ross. They were the apple of his eye; their presence filled his days with immense joy and pride. He is also survived by 12 great grandchildren, Carson Simons, Knoxx Wilson, Graelon Pulse, Hunter Wilson, Bayleigh Sipes, Bryleigh Sipes, Makynlee Campbell, Connor Puckett, Chloe Arthur, Clara Arthur, Jacoby Howell, and Kyler Campbell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Sipes in 1986.
In honoring Jim’s memory, let us remember his unwavering spirit and zest for life. He taught those around him the importance of hard work, kindness, and making lasting connections. While we mourn his loss deeply, we find solace in knowing that Jim’s impact will be felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at a later date to allow family and friends to come together in unity to pay tribute to a remarkable man who touched so many lives. Shackelford Funeral Directors of Bolivar are in charge of professional arrangements. In lieu of flowers or gifts, contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
