Obituary: Jimmy Cox
Jimmy Cox, a dedicated conductor with Union Pacific Railroad for over 40 years, passed away on December 6, 2023, in Jackson, Tennessee. He was born on March 2, 1944, in Middleton, Tennessee to his loving parents, Alvin Clinton Cox and Virless Henson Cox. A celebration of life will take place at a later date. Shackelford Funeral Directors of Bolivar is in charge of professional arrangements.
Known for his humble nature and aversion to attention, Jimmy was a man who didn’t want anyone making a fuss over him. Despite this reluctance, his impact on those around him was profound. Throughout his career at Union Pacific Railroad, Jimmy exemplified professionalism and commitment. His years of service left an indelible mark on the railroad industry, earning him great respect from colleagues and friends alike. After dedicating himself wholeheartedly to his work, Jimmy retired in 2005, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and devotion.
In addition to his successful career, Jimmy selflessly served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Vietnam War. From June of 1965 to June of 1967, he joined the ranks of the esteemed 82nd Airborne Division and 101st Cavalry. His courageous actions on the battlefield earned him a Purple Heart—an honor bestowed upon those wounded or killed in service.
Outside of work and military service, Jimmy found joy in simple pleasures such as fishing and golfing. These hobbies allowed him to unwind and appreciate the beauty of nature that surrounded him. Whether casting a line into the tranquil waters or teeing off on a sunny afternoon, these moments brought peace and tranquility to his spirit.
Jimmy’s family meant everything to him throughout his life. He is survived by his beloved wife, Myra Cox, who stood by him through thick and thin throughout their 54 year marriage. Their unwavering love and dedication were evident to all who knew them. They met and two weeks later were married on December 5, 1969, in Memphis, proving that “when you know, you know”. Their children, Sharla Cox Mirdo of Hebron, Kentucky and Matt Cox of Grand Valley, held a special place in his heart. Jimmy found immense joy and pride in watching them grow into the accomplished individuals they became.
In addition to his wife and children, Jimmy is survived by his cherished sisters, Hulene King of Middleton and Geraldine Bodiford of Memphis. These strong women were pillars of support throughout his life, providing unconditional love, guidance, and friendship when he needed it most. Furthermore, Jimmy leaves behind a legacy through his grandchildren. Kaitlyn Mirdo, Christopher Mirdo, and Amery Cox will forever carry their grandfather’s spirit within them. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Larry, June Alvin, and Bobby Cox; and two sisters, Elouise Ledford and Juanita Cox. Memorial contributions in his name may be sent to the Wounded Warrior Project.
While mourning the loss of Jimmy Cox, it is important to remember the impact he had on the lives he touched. His dedication to his work, bravery in serving his country, and devotion to family are qualities that will be forever cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind memories that will always be treasured and a legacy that will endure for generations to come.
