Obituary: Joe Avent
Joe Avent ~ June 1, 1932 – June 23, 2023 (age 91)
Joe Avent, 91, was born on June 1, 1932, to the late George Avent and Irene Beauregard Avent, and passed away on June 23, 2023.
He worked at the tannery for many years and also at the Hardeman County Highway Department until he retired at the age of 65. Mr. Avent loved being a mechanic and builder where as he passed his knowledge and helping hands to his nephews, Eddie Pirtle and James Pirtle. Every child he came in contact with knows him for giving them a treat of chewing gum for over 60 plus years.
Joe Avent professed his life in Christ at an early age. At the age of 88 he was rebaptized. He was a very humble, kind, and loving man. Joe raised his youngest daughters, Velma and Zoie Avent, at the age of nine and 10. Joe and his wife Ethel Abbott-Avent were United on April 11, 1998. They loved watching Whoopi on The View on television. They also loved discussing the “Bible” and politics, and planting, growing, and sharing flowers. Joe and Ethel enjoyed going to the “First Monday” Mississippi Sale. They coordinated outfits to step in clean at the church on Sunday morning. The love they had for each other was unbreakable. When he lost her he lost his world.
Funeral services were held at Hillfield Missionary Baptist Church in Toone on Saturday, July 1, 2023, at 12 p.m.
He is survived by his daughters Wonda McDaniel, Sonia Bills (Jimmy Bills), and Zoie Avent-Carroll(Bobby Carroll); three siblings Rosie Lee Pirtle; sister, Rosie Lee Pirtle; sixteen grandchildren; eleven Grandsons; five granddaughters; thirty-two great-grandchildren; twenty grandsons; eleven granddaughter’s; three special grandchildren he raised as his sons, “twins” Derrill and Jerrill Bills, and Commeiko Futrell. He always wanted boys out of five daughters. We have produced many men to carry on his legacy.
He was also preceded in death by his wife Doris Avent-Chatman in March of 1986; two daughters, Pandora Chatman and Velma (Mira) Richardson; and siblings, Benjamin Avent and Lillie Mae Avent.
