Obituary: Joe Wendell Woods

Joe Wendell Woods ~ January 26, 1936 – April 30, 2023 (age 87)

Joe Wendell Woods, 87, of Whiteville passed away on Sunday, April 30, 2023. He was born on January 26, 1936, in Hardeman County to the late Earnest and Sallie Mae Woods.  

His funeral service was held at the Jerome Boyd Chapel at Dixie Funeral Home on Saturday May 6, 2023, at 3 p.m. with Pastor David L. Perry in charge. Burial was in the Bethlehem #1 Missionary Baptist Church – Mercer cemetery and Dixie Funeral Home was in charge of the professional service.  

Mr. Woods was a retired veteran of the United States Navy. On April 18, 1961, he married Lois Taylor and to this union two children were born, Wendy and Joel. After retiring from the Navy in 1976, he returned to Hardeman County. He was not a high school graduate, but upon returning to Hardeman County and in two years received his high school diploma. Mr. Woods was a faithful member of Bethlehem #1 Missionary Baptist Church and served as a deacon.  

Preceding him in death were his parents; four brothers, Robert Lee, Elbert, Larry, and Willie B. Woods; and two sisters, Katherine Turner and Pauline Ellis.  

Mr. Woods leaves to cherish his life his wife of 63 years, Lois; his children, Wendy (Barry) Boler and Joel (Arlanda) Woods; three brothers, Herbert (Gloria), Earnest, and Rochelle Woods; one sister, Ruby jean Woods; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends who will truly miss him.
