Obituary: Joy Herriman

Joy Herriman ~ June 4, 1940 – February 9, 2023 (age 82)

Joy Herriman, 82, of Bolivar, passed from this life on Thursday evening, February 9, 2023, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.

Mrs. Herriman was born on Tuesday, June 4, 1940, in McNairy County, daughter of the late Buford and Alta Howell Grantham, living most of her life in Hardeman County. She was a 1957 graduate of Bolivar Central High School and started dating Grady Herriman when she was 12 years old. Mrs. Herriman married him on June 4, 1957, a date that is not only her birthday, but also Grady’s. She was best known as “Miss Joy” at the Child Enrichment Center at Bolivar First Baptist Church, where she worked for 20 years. Mrs. Herriman was a big basketball fan and enjoyed cooking, taking trips to Branson, Missouri and the mountains, and family
gatherings, but received her greatest enjoyment from being around her children and grandchildren, who were her whole world. Mrs. Herriman was a member of Bolivar First Baptist Church.

Services will be at the Shackelford chapel in Bolivar on Sunday, February 12, 2023, at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Wyatt Cemetery in Hornsby.

Survivors include her husband of almost 66 years, Grady Herriman of Bolivar; three daughters, DaJuan Sain (Bobby) of Bolivar, Leanne Massey (Mike) of Jackson, and Julie Strope (Eric) of Bolivar; a son, Steve Herriman (Sherry) of Bolivar; a sister, Coy Mitchell (John) of Selmer; eleven grandchildren, Blake Sain (Melessa), Chase Sain (Shelby) and Shelby Bailey (W.T.), Becky Bolyard (B.J.), Mica Campbell (Cody), Brandon Massey (Kristen), Nick Massey (Lauren), Hayden Jeter, Clay Strope, Matt Herriman (Morgan) and Brent Herriman (Ashton); Twenty-two great grandchildren, Livvy, Hagan, Eli, Sutton, Tanner, Abbie, Tucker, Alyssa, Kadie, Austin, Miley, Carson, Cooper, Anderson, Jase, Sadie, Julia, Colton, Judah, Isaiah, Nora and Harper; and two great great grandchildren, Maverick and Mackenzie.

Memorial contributions in her name may be sent to the Bolivar First Baptist Church Child Enrichment Center.
