Obituary: Mabel Treadway Parks
Mabel Treadway Parks, a beloved member of the community, passed away peacefully at her home in Somerville on December 27, 2023. She was born on August 30, 1929, in Fayette County, Tennessee, to George Newell Treadway and Mable Lucille Henley Treadway.
Mabel had a fulfilling career as a production worker and quality control inspector for Salant. She dedicated many years of her life to her work, always ensuring the highest standards were met. Her commitment and attention to detail were truly admirable.
Outside of her professional life, Mabel found immense joy in spending time with her family. She cherished her role as a grandmother and great-grandmother, and loved nothing more than babysitting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Their laughter and playful energy brought great happiness to her heart.
In her leisure time, Mabel had several hobbies that nourished her mind and spirit. She enjoyed challenging herself with crossword puzzles, which she solved with remarkable skills. As she grew older, she discovered a passion for playing cards with friends and family. These card games provided countless moments of camaraderie and friendly competition.
One of Mabel’s greatest passions was gardening. She had a green thumb and took pride in cultivating beautiful flowers and plants. Amongst all her gardening endeavors, Mabel especially delighted in growing watermelons. From seed to harvest, she lovingly nurtured these refreshing fruits that brought joy to countless summer days.
A woman of faith and devotion, Mabel was an active member of Parks Chapel Methodist Church throughout her life. Her dedication to the church community was unwavering, and she found solace and strength within its walls.
Mabel’s accomplishments were admirable, but it was the love she shared with those around her that truly defined her character. She was preceded in death by her beloved father, George Newell Treadway; mother, Mable Lucille Henley Treadway; sisters, Shirley Denby and Yvonne Calhoun; brother, Fred Treadway; and her cherished husband, Carroll “Babo” Parks. Together, they formed a strong family unit that provided her joy and support throughout her life.
Mabel is survived by her loving children, Mary Parks, Connie Ferge, Dwain Parks, and Carl M. Parks, all of Somerville. She is also survived by her dear sister, Frances Gabbard, of Walnut, Mississippi. Mabel’s legacy lives on through the nine grandchildren she leaves behind, as well as the 14 great-grandchildren with two more on the way. Additionally, she is survived by one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be held at Parks Chapel Cemetery on Tuesday, January 2, 2024. Shackelford Funeral Directors is in charge of the services.
Mabel Treadway Parks will always be remembered for her kind heart, unwavering faith, and dedication to family and community. Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved her dearly. Memorial contributions in her name may be sent to Parks Chapel Methodist Church or Cemetery.
