Obituary: Malcolm “Larry” Hooper

Malcolm “Larry” Hooper ~ December 18, 1941 – November 7, 2025 (age 83)

Malcolm “Larry” Hooper, age 83, of Toone, passed from this life on Friday morning, November 7, 2025, at his home in Toone, surrounded by his loving family following a lengthy illness.

Larry was born on December 18, 1941, in Munford, Tennessee, to the late Malcolm Hooper and Margaret Ballard Hooper. He spent the majority of his life in Hardeman County, settling in the Toone and Cloverort area.

A true man of the land, Larry began farming as a teenager and continued until the early 1970s. He then transitioned to a lifelong passion, beginning his work in sawmilling alongside his family. Larry dedicated the remainder of his life to this trade, not only for the work itself but for the opportunity to share his wisdom and skill with his loved ones.

Outside of his work, Larry had a profound love for the countryside, enjoying travel to see new landscapes. He was an avid collector of model tractors and loved to drive them as well. A man of deep faith, he enjoyed reading and studying his Bible and was a member of Toone Baptist Church.

Chapel services will be at Shackelford Funeral Directors on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at 2 p.m. in Bolivar with the burial in the Vernon Cemetery near Toone.

Larry is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Karen Hooper of Toone; four sons, Larry “Bubba” Hooper (Rita) of Jackson, Timmy Hooper (Diane) of Jackson, Scott Hooper (Jackie) of Michigan, and Jonathan Hooper (Daryl) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and three daughters, Annette Simer (Ronnie) of Toone, Tammy Rimer (Brian) of Toone, and Ashley Hooper of Jackson. He leaves a legacy of love for his family, which includes 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and his beloved companion, Millie.

He is also survived by his two brothers, Tony Hooper and Donnie Hooper, both of Toone; and four sisters, Linda Clem of Texarakana, Texas, Charlotte Hooper, Sandy Hooper, and Connie Pickard (David), all of Toone; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Malcolm and Margaret Hooper; a brother, Gerald Hooper; a grandson, Jonathan Watkins; a nephew, Justin Pickard; and a niece, Debbie Turner.
