Obituary: Martha Frances Ward

Martha Frances Ward ~ October 4, 1941 – August 18, 2025 (age 83)

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Martha “Marty” Frances Ward on Monday, August 18, 2025, in Anthem, Arizona. She was 83 years old, a devoted wife, loving mother, and cherished sister whose life was marked by adventure, service, and deep love for family.

Born in Bolivar, Tennessee, Marty graduated from Central High School in 1959. She pursued higher education at Memphis State University, Michigan State University, and Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Her career reflected both her intellect and versatility, beginning as a Research Assistant at Michigan State and spanning roles at the Smithsonian Institution, private law firms, and ultimately the U.S. Army. She served with distinction as a personnel management specialist, program manager, and business management analyst, working in Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Heidelberg, Germany, before retiring in 1994.

Marty married the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Ward, in 1964. Together they shared 58 wonderful years of marriage until his passing on September 24, 2022. After retiring, they made their home in Bolivar, Tennessee, from 1995 until 2011, when they relocated to Anthem, Arizona, to enjoy their retirement years. Marty and Bob traveled the world together, exploring Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Bolivia, Chile, Hong Kong, and beyond. They fell in love with the artistry and spirit of Botswana, importing handmade baskets, carvings, paintings, and jewelry, which they shared with others and incorporated into their home. Marty especially delighted in jewelry, attending gem shows nationwide and nurturing her lifelong appreciation for craftsmanship.

Above all, Marty was a devoted wife and mother. She and Bob raised two sons, Dan and David. Her son David passed away at a young age, and in her later years, her son Dan lovingly cared for her as her health declined.

Marty is survived by her son, Daniel Ward; her brother, Thomas McKinnie; her sister-in-law, Kaye McKinnie; her nephew, Holland McKinnie; her sister-in-law, Kathie Winer and her husband Pete Winer; and their children, Kirsten Winters, Brad Winer, and Grant Winer.

Services will be at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Bolivar on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at 2 p.m. with visitation starting at 1 p.m. The inurnment will follow at Walnut Grove Cemetery.

Marty will be remembered for her adventurous spirit, her love of travel, her professional dedication, and most of all, her warmth and devotion to her family.
