Obituary: Mary A. Vandiver

Mary A. Vandiver ~ October 30, 1936 – February 18, 2024 (age 87)

Mary A. Vandiver, age 87, of Bolivar, departed this life Sunday, February 18, 2024, at Baptist-Reynolds Hospice House in Collierville, Tennessee.

She was a native of Hardeman County and grew up on the family farm, the daughter of the late Robert O. and Sadie Hanna Sisco. A 1954 graduate of Bolivar Central High School, she married Mr. Donald C. “Sonny” Vandiver on October 30, 1954, in Ripley, Mississippi. They moved to Chicago where they lived before returning to Tennessee to reside in Memphis from 1960 -1994. The Vandivers retired back to Hardeman County and Mr. Vandiver passed from this life on September 11, 2015.  

Mrs. Vandiver worked as an office manager and bookkeeper for J. Morgan Newbern and for Catherine’s, both in Memphis. She was a member of Bolivar First Baptist Church where she attended faithfully for 25 years. Mary was always an athletic person and, in her later years, enjoyed playing golf with her friends at the Hardeman County Golf and Country Club. She built her life around her faith and her family never wavering in her commitment to both.

Chapel will be at the Shackelford Funeral Home chapel in Bolivar on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at 1 p.m. with a burial in the West Memorial Cemetery.

She leaves her son, Ronnie Vandiver of Bolivar and his significant other, Marilyn Albert; also, nieces, nephews, and other extended family.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Joan Thearp; and a brother, Robert William Sisco.

Memorials may be sent to the charity of the donor’s choice.
