Obituary: Mary Amelia Howell

Mary Amelia Howell ~ March 23, 1927Sunday, July 13, 2025 (age 98)

Mary Amelia Howell, age 98, of Bolivar, departed this life on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at NHC in Somerville. 

Born in Ripley, Mississippi, her family moved to Hardeman County when she was a young girl where she lived the rest of her life. The daughter of the late William Henry Richarson and Zula Irene Carmichael Richardson, she was married to Mr. Delta R. Howell until his death on February 4, 1991. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, William Gary Howell (1973) and a son-in-law, Harl William “Bud” Hughes (2004).

Mrs. Howell was a faithful, long-time member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church, as was her husband who served as a deacon. It was there she taught primary Sunday school classes for many years. She was primarily a homemaker but, worked a few years at Master Slack in Bolivar. Mrs. Howell enjoyed crocheting, making Christmas stockings with felt and sequins and taking care of her home. She was an avid Atlanta Braves and Duke university basketball fan.

Services for Mrs. Howell will be held at Walnut Grove Baptist Church on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at 2 p.m. The interment will be in the Walnut Grove Cemetery.

She leaves a daughter, Mary Hughes; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Hughes, both of Bartlett, Tennessee.

Memorials may be sent to the Walnut Grove Baptist Church, Bolivar.
