Obituary: Mary Elizabeth McMahan Cox

Mary Elizabeth McMahan Cox was born in McNairy County on August 1, 1939, the daughter of the late William Elmer McMahan and Icie Irene Weatherly McMahan. She graduated from Selmer High School in 1958. Mary Elizabeth was united in marriage to Carlos Lee Cox on August 5, 1967, who preceded her in death on April 22, 2019.
She was employed at Brown Shoe Company, the pants factory in Bolivar, Selmer Apparel and Jetricks. In her leisure time, Mrs. Cox enjoyed reading, homemaking, spending time with family and friends, and she looked forward to daily conversations with her sisters. She always made everyone feel loved and accepted and was always smiling and talking. Mrs. Cox made you feel like you really mattered. She was loved by everyone and was affectionately known as “Aunt Mary”.
Chapel services will be held at Shackelford Funeral Directors on Tuesday, March 18, 2025,at 1 p.m.in Middleton with the burial in Reaves Cemetery.
She is survived by her son, Danny (Dana) Cox of Middleton; stepdaughter, Carla (Mike) Morrow of Walnut, Mississippi; two sisters, Martha (Fulton) Huddleston of Shawnee, Kansas and Julia Spoonmore of Plano, Texas; three nieces; seven nephews; and 20 great nieces and nephews; and her lifelong friend, Becky Hunter. Mrs. Cox was also preceded in death by a brother, William Andrew McMahan. At the end of the conversation, she would always say “I Love You and Don’t Forget It”. She will be dearly missed by all who know her.
The family would like to thank Martha McMahan, Amy Wilbanks Crouse, Diane Flakes, and Legacy Hospice for their loving care. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to Reaves Cemetery Fund or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
