Obituary: Mary Jo Jacobs

Mary Jo Jacobs ~ October 13, 1945 – May 28, 2025 (age 79)

Mary Jo Jacobs, a beloved member of her community and a cherished matriarch of her family, passed away peacefully in her home in Middleton on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on October 13, 1945, in Hardeman County, Tennessee, Mary Jo dedicated her life to her family and her work, leaving behind a legacy of love, hard work, and unwavering faith.

For over 30 years, Mary Jo proudly served in her career at the Brown Shoe Company, embodying the values of dedication and commitment. Beyond her professional life, she was a devoted homemaker, pouring her heart into her family with every meal she cooked and every garden she tended. Her passion for cooking brought joy to countless family gatherings, where her delicious creations were always a highlight. Mary Jo found immense pleasure in nurturing not only the plants in her garden but also the relationships with those she loved. She was well known for being a hard worker and being very active, always cleaning, and doing things for others.

A longtime member of the Middleton Pentecostal Tabernacle, Mary Jo’s faith was integral to her life. She found solace and strength within her church community, which she actively participated in, reflecting her deep spiritual commitment. Mary Jo’s kindness, warm spirit, and tenacity were felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Mary Jo’s love for music, particularly the heartfelt tunes of Bob Seger, often provided a soundtrack to her life, accompanying the many memories she cherished. Whether it was during quiet moments at home or times spent with family, the melodies brought her joy and comfort.

She is survived by her daughters, Jackie Leann Jacobs Chandler of Jackson and Deborah Carol Jacobs Thacker of Middleton; and son, Gerald Wayne Jacobs of Bolivar. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Nina Nicole Keenum of Southaven, Mississippi, and Gerald Brooks Jacobs of Middleton, along with her great-grandchildren, Cameron and Lillie Keenum. The bond she shared with each of them, marked by unconditional love and support, will forever remain in their hearts.

Mary Jo was preceded in death by her parents, Jimmy Hollinger and Anita Milan Nickleson; her beloved husband, Jackie Brooks Jacobs; and her brothers, David and Charles Harold. The absence of these loved ones has left a profound sadness, yet their memories are cherished deeply by all who knew them.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Mary Jo’s extraordinary life during the visitation on at the Middleton Pentecostal Tabernacle, located at 560 South Neely Road, Middleton, Tennessee 38052 on Monday, June 2, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by the funeral service beginning at 1 p.m. Shackelford Funeral Directors of Bolivar is in charge of professional arrangements.

As we remember Mary Jo Jacobs, we celebrate her indomitable spirit and the love she so generously shared with those around her. Her legacy will continue to inspire us to live fully, love deeply, and walk in faith.  Memorial contributions in her name may be sent to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
