Obituary: Mary Sue Harris

Mary Sue Harris ~ July 8, 1936 – October 25, 2024 (age 88)

Mary Sue Harris, age 88, of Independence, Mississippi, passed away on Friday morning, October 25, 2024, at Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth.

She was born in Bolivar on Monday, July 8, 1936, to the late Marvin and Daisy Pirtle Kiestler. On October 19, 1957, she was united in marriage to Mr. Emory Ridgell Harris. The Harris’ moved to Independence, Mississippi in 1963 where she lived the rest of her life. She was primarily a homemaker, but was also a integral part of her family’s well company which Mr. and Mrs. Harris operated together. They were married almost 44 years at the time of his passing on October 3, 2001.

Graveside services will be held at Hebron Cemetery near Middleton on Sunday, October 27, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. Shackelford Funeral Directors of Bolivar is in charge of the professional arrangements.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Debra Sue Cox on May 1, 2005; her grandson, Dennis Paul Harris on September 8, 1996; and four sisters and four brothers.

Mrs. Harris was a proud, long-time member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Independence. She enjoyed gardening and canning the fruits of her labor for her family. She was the type of lady who enjoyed being outside whether it was doing yardwork or tending to her flowers. Mrs. Harris often said the Lord blessed her to be the type of person who could make people smile and to be a witness for Christ. Many times, she was known to share her story with the nurses and doctors who cared for her and anyone else she could talk with. She liked to make others happy and to enjoy a good laugh!  Most of all, she loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She leaves her son, Dennis Harris of Independence; her sister, Shirley Mathis of Memphis; three grandchildren, Jeremy Hunt of Bolivar, April Harris Barnes (Kevin) of Hernando, Mississippi, and Jennifer Townsend (Norman) of Middleton; and six great-grandchildren, Joshua and Julianne Townsend, Harrison and Kaden Rice and, Allyson and Noah Townsend.

Memorials may be sent to the charity of the donor’s choice.
