Obituary: Norma Emerson
Norma Emerson, a dedicated and respected retired postmaster, passed away on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at Forest Cove Manor in Jackson, Tennessee. She was born on April 3, 1936, in Gibson County, Tennessee. Norma was a star basketball player for Gibson County and still holds the basketball record. Her outstanding skills led her to be in into the Gibson County Hall of Fame.
Norma’s life was filled with numerous accomplishments and passions. She found joy in her hobbies of painting, gardening, and traveling, but above all cherished her time spent with family. Norma had a deep love for flowers that translated into her passion for gardening.
She had a fulfilling career as a postmaster, but her proudest accomplishments were tied to her faith and community involvement. Norma was a devoted Christian, teaching Sunday school as a young parent, and had been a member of Saulsbury Baptist Church at the time of her passing.
Chapel services will be held at Shackelford Funeral Directors chapel on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at 4 p.m. in Bolivar with the burial in the Saulsbury Cemetery.
Norma is preceded in death by her husband, Rich Emerson; her father, Walter Gleason Pirtle; and mother, Alene Gardner Pirtle. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Diane Laster of Jackson; a son, Matt Emerson and his wife, Kim of Hornsby; and grandchildren, Robert Connor Emerson, Campbell Emerson, and Katelyn Emerson. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Cynthia Marie Laster; and her sisters, Helen Pirtle Parrish and Doris Nell Coleman.
The visitation for Norma will take place at Shackelford Funeral Directors on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at 3 p.m. in Bolivar followed by the funeral service at 4 p.m. The interment will be held at the Saulsbury Cemetery in Saulsbury.
In honoring the life of Norma Emerson, we remember a kind-hearted soul whose presence will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Memorial contributions in her name may be sent to the charity of the donor’s choice.
