Obituary: Pastor Edward Bowers, Jr.

Pastor Edward Bowers, Jr. ~ March 15, 1944 – November 10, 2023 (age 79)

On November 10, 2023, at 8:30am, Pastor Edward Bowers Jr. departed this life. The legacy of Pastor Edward Bowers Jr. began on March 15, 1944, when he was born to the late Annie Mae Price Bowers and Edward Bowers Sr. (aka Shangle).

His spiritual journey began when he accepted Christ at the age of 12. After this acceptance, Pastor Bowers continued to grow spiritually. He became a member of the Little Walnut Grove M.B. Church (Assembly), where he performed the following duties: Sunday School Superintendent, deacon, teacher and later the illustrious pastor and overseer. Junior, as he was so lovingly called, answered his call into the ministry and became the pastor of LIttle Walnut in 1985, where he remained until his death.

During his 79 years on this Earth, Pastor Bowers experienced many accomplishments. He was a graduate of the American Baptist Theological Seminary; a foster parent (along with his wife) for 44 years; a member of the Masonic Lodge; President of the United Sons & Daughters of Charity No. 2 for 30 years; created the Food Ministry 11 years ago at Little Walnut Grove that delivers 100 meals per week in the community; Pastor of Little Walnut Grove for 38 years, and a foreman for Illinois Central Gulf/Canadian National Railroad for 32 years.

His funeral service will be held at the Jerome Boyd Chapel at Dixie Funeral Home on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Rosie Wooden in charge.  Burial will be in the Little Walnut Grove Church Cemetery-Hornsby and Dixie Funeral Home is in charge of the professional service.

Pastor Bowers was preceded in death by both his father, Edward Bowers Sr. and Annie Mae Price Bowers, as well as a son, Terrance Bowers.

Pastor Edward Bowers Jr. leaves to cherish his memory and continue his legacy his wife of 56 years, Mae Lena Marcell Bowers; five children, Terrell (Tenesia) Bowers, Melanie (Shanell) Jones, Jhanaid Murphy, Patrick Bowers, and Flossie (Rodney) Scott, all of Bolivar, Tennessee; a nephew, Kevin (Marie) Marcell, who he considered a son, of Jackson, Tennessee; two sisters, Lorean (Gabe) Woods of Dover, Delaware and Pastor Earlean Braddock of Bolivar, Tennessee; two aunts, Daisy (Odell) Neely and Lily (aka Bernice) Bowers; and one uncle, Willie Ray (aka Bo) Bowers. all of New York, New York; 16 grandchildren; a loving congregation; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
