Obituary: Virgil Eugene Nutt

Virgil Eugene Nutt ~ September 15, 1940 – April 1, 2025 (age 84)

Mr. Virgil Eugene Nutt, 84, of Germantown (formerly of Middleton, Tennessee and Walnut, Mississippi), beloved husband of Rufina; loving father of Lisa, Vincent (Evelyn), and the late Vaughn Nutt; grandfather of Vincent (Huda) Nutt Jr., Vanessa (Joseph) Smith, and Ellis Nutt; great-grandfather of one, passed from this life on Thursday, April 1, 2025, at his home with loving family at his side.

Virgil was born on September 15, 1940, in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, the fifth child of James Robert and Clarice Rose (nee Kelly) Nutt. Raised on the family farm, he was familiar with hard work including chores before a long walk to school and summers picking cotton. After completing high school, he moved to Memphis and worked for International Harvester a short while. But soon took a keen interest in real estate and trained as a realtor and auctioneer. Always a farm boy at heart and feeling drawn to the land, he found success and fulfillment as a real estate agent specializing in rural, land, and farm sales. He was the founder and owner of Nutt Auction and Realty in Middleton and worked well into his 70s retiring only when ill health necessitated.

His family will miss his beautiful smile and his stories of life on the farm thrown in with a funny joke or two; and are grateful for the strong work ethic, value of faith and family, and respect for the land he imparted. Our hearts are broken in the passing of our dearest husband, Daddy, and “Pops” while also comforted he is in the arms of Jesus whole again and embraced by loved ones who have gone on before. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Thomas, Glenn, Jack, and Jimmy; and a sister, Mrs. Marlene Rhoten. His son, Vaughn died in 2009.

Virgil was a longtime member of Roger Springs Church of Christ.

Funeral services were held at Shackelford Funeral Home in Middleton, Tennessee on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at 11 a.m., which was followed by the interment in Middleton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory appreciated to Gideons International.
