Obituary: Vivian Mayfield Babb

Vivian Mayfield Babb ~ May 9, 1927 – November 11, 2025 (age 98)

Vivian Mayfield Babb, a beloved figure in her community, passed away peacefully at her home in Toone, Tennessee, on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at the age of 98. Born on May 9, 1927, in Silerton, Tennessee, Vivian devoted her life to her family and the work she loved. She had a heart full of kindness and a spirit that enriched the lives of everyone who knew her.

Vivian’s career was marked by her dedication and warmth, as she worked at several places, including the cafeteria at Toone Elementary School and Kilgore Corporation. Her ability to bring joy to others through her work reflected her nurturing personality.

In addition to her career, Vivian was known for her passion for puzzles, as she found delight in working crossword and jigsaw puzzles. A talented baker, she excelled at creating delicious pies, cakes, and rolls that brought comfort and joy to family gatherings. Vivian also cherished her time in the garden, where she grew beautiful flowers that brightened her home and the hearts of those around her. Her love for the outdoors was evident; she enjoyed spending time in the fresh air, surrounded by nature’s beauty.  She was a member of Toone Baptist Church.

Vivian leaves behind a loving family who will forever hold her memory close. She is survived by her daughters, Janet Underwood of Toone, Debra Johnson of Collierville, Kathy Watts and Mike of Germantown, and Julie Mathis and Robert of Henderson. Her brother, Kenneth Mayfield of Toone, and her grandchildren—Teri Read and David of Salt Lake City, Utah, Wendy Ray and Chris of Memphis, Lindsey Watts of Memphis, Michael Watts, Jr. of Germantown, Jonathan Mathis and Christina of Henderson, and Justin Mathis of Henderson—will carry her legacy forward, as will her great-grandchildren, Aspen and Joshua Read of Salt Lake City, Utah, Mara Thompson and Ryan of Salt Lake City, Utah, Willow and Rowan Read of Salt Lake City, Utah, Jacob Ray of Memphis, Layla Ferge of Jacks Creek, and, Savannah, James, and Liam Mathis, all of Henderson.

Vivian is reunited in eternal rest with her loving husband, James Roy Babb, whom she married on January 7, 1950, and he preceded her in death on July 2, 2000; her parents, Jesse Franklin Mayfield and Mamie Kathryn Oliver Mayfield; and her siblings, Marvin, Jim, Edith, and Ailene. She was also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Lauren Kelso, and her son-in-law, Steve Johnson.

A memorial gathering to celebrate Vivian’s life will be held at Shackelford Funeral Directors on Friday, November 21, 2025, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in Bolivar, Tennessee. This time will allow friends and family to come together to honor and remember a truly remarkable woman whose spirit touched so many lives. Vivian Mayfield Babb will forever be remembered for her warm heart, nurturing spirit, and the beautiful legacy she leaves behind. Memorial contributions in her name may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Toone Baptist Church.
