Obituary: Walter Jones – Georgia
Walter Jones ~ February 17, 1960 ~ December 8, 2022 (62 Years)
A Time to be Born: Walter Jones (Wal-lee), the ninth of 14 children, was born on February 17, 1960, in Whiteville, Tennessee to the late Kary and Mae Jane Jones.
A Time to Learn: Walter attended the Hardeman County Schools of Bethlehem, Allen White, and Whiteville Elementary, Bolivar Junior High, and Bolivar Central High School where he was a proud member of the graduating class of 1979. From seventh to tenth, Walter played as a shooting guard on the basketball team. In addition to his primary education, he attended Tennessee State University and majored in agriculture and computer science.
A Time to Worship: Walter professed his belief in Christ at an early age and joined Bartlett Chapel C.M.E. Church.
A Time to Serve: Walter, served in the United States Army from 1979 until 1992 where he obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant. His military occupations included 54B30 Chemical Operation Specialist, 77W30 Water Treatment Specialist, and Smoke Operator Specialist. He was a Gulf War Era Soldier whose overseas duty included serving in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Walter’s accomplishments in the military included earning: The Southwest Asia Service Medal, Bronze Service Star (Awarded twice), Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (Third Oak Leaf cluster), Good Conduct Medal (Awarded twice), National Defense Service Ribbon, NCO Professional Development Ribbon #2, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon #2, Kuwait Liberation Medal, and the driver and Mechanic Badge (With Driver W-bar).
A Time to Parent: Walter was a dedicated, caring father and grandfather to his three boys, one daughter, and two grandsons, respectively. With his dedication and care, Walter made sure his children were educated in some of the best schools in Nashville and Georgia.
A Time to Transition: On December 8, 2022, God called Walter to his heavenly home at 5 a.m. from the Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital, Midtown Campus in Columbus, Georgia.
His funeral service was held at Dixie Funeral Home on Saturday, December 17, 2022 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Charles Woods in charge. Burial was in the West Tennessee Veterans cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee and Dixie Funeral Home was in charge of the professional service.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Kary and Mae Jane Jones, and three siblings, Joe Louis Jones, Lois Jones, and Barbara Ruth Morment.
Walter is survived by and leaves to cherish his memories, three sons: Joshua Jones, Brandon Jones, and Walter Jones, Jr., one daughter, Ivana Lewis, and their mother, Tawanda Lewis; two grandsons, Marcus Scott and Marquis Scott of Columbus, Georgia; siblings, Kay C. Jones of Jackson, Tennessee, Mary Elizabeth Davis Columbus, Ohio, James Jones of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Delois Jones of Whiteville, Tennessee, Juanita Jones Robertson of Whiteville, Tennessee, Pearly Jones of Nashville, Tennessee, George Jones of Memphis, Tennessee, Robert Jones of Caruthersville, Missouri, Timothy Jones of Nashville, Tennessee, Daniel (Gail) Jones of Whiteville, Tennessee, Merlene (Barry) Barlow of Nashville, Tennessee, Brenda Jones of Southfield, Michigan, Dulvet (Leo) Allen of Chicago, Illinois, Janice (Tommy) Turner of Whiteville, Tennessee, Larry Taylor of Laconia, Tennessee, and Jerry Cannon of St. Louis, Missouri; a special aunt, Pearline Jones Cape Girardeau, Missouri; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
