Obituary: Willis P. Hornsby
Willis P. Hornsby ~ April 10, 1929 – September 13, 2023 (age 94)
Mr. Hornsby passed away on Wednesday afternoon, September 13, 2023, at the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital at the age of 94 years, five months and three days.
Born in Memphis to the late Brooks Parker and Pearl Griffin Hornsby, he lived all of his life in Hardeman County and was a graduate of Bolivar Central High School and the LSU School of Banking. On November 17, 1952, he was wed to Ann Baker in Corinth, Mississippi. They enjoyed 66 years of marriage before her passing on August 8, 2019. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Willis was preceded in death by two sisters, Elynor Hornsby DeBerry and Nell Hornsby Maddox.
Mr. Hornsby was a banker and former president of the Bank of Bolivar where he served his community faithfully for 42 years. He was also active, in the past, with Hornsby Ruritan Club, Bolivar Optimist Club, and the Bolivar Historical and Community Foundation. Willis served his country in the US Army from 1948 – 1952 during the Korean Conflict. Attaining the rank of Sergeant, he served as a surveyor for the reconstruction of Japan following World War II and in direct support for our armed forces in Korea. He was a former long-time deacon for the Hornsby Baptist Church and, in his spare time, enjoyed farming, hunting, and fishing.
Services are at the Shackelford chapel in Bolivar on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at 2 p.m. with Jack Price officiating. Burial will be in the Bolivar Memorial Cemetery.
He leaves behind his daughter, Nancy Hornsby Foote of Bolivar; his son, John Parker Hornsby, and wife, Wendy Michelle, of Bolivar; his sister, Janie Hornsby Ross, of Bolivar; four grandchildren, Adam Keith Foote, Shaun Parker Hornsby, Amanda Nichole Hornsby Frazier, and John Zachary Hornsby; and three great-grandchildren, Chloe Grace Frazier, Elizabeth Ann Frazier, and Holden Parker Hornsby.
Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society or Hornsby Baptist Church Building Fund.
