Pecan Grove Residents Donate to Tornado Victims

Residents of the Pecan Grove Senior Apartments partnered with some area churches and collected items to donate to the recent tornado victims of Covington and McNairy County.

The idea for the project was spurred by Donna Vales, a resident of Pecan Grove, who has a daughter and grandchildren who live in McNairy County.

“It has been hard for Convington and McNairy Counties,” said Vales.

Vales reached out to Bernice Lofties, Pecan Grove Senior Apartments Manager, and shared her heart to give. Lofties was surprised at the selflessness and amazed at the idea. She worked with Grenesha Braddock, Pecan Grove Apartments Service Coordinator, who helped with everything coming together.

“That they could help someone other than themselves, because for some people, after you get a certain age, you think about ‘how am I going to make it’,” said Lofties who then reached out to other residents. “I asked for them to bring whatever they wanted to bring, that included monetary or other items. More than half of the residents were able to donate in some form or fashion whether it was with a can good or going out and buying some bottled water.”

Lofties also reached out to the pastors of some area churches that included Serenity Apostolic Deliverance Hub, Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Open Arms Ministry, and Faith is the Key Ministry.

“I am so excited the residents took the time to do what they are doing, and their hearts are so big that they are thinking about someone else. We bless and give unto others,” said Lofties who noted the community that already exists at Pecan Grove. “They are always doing little things, but this is the first time they have given in such a big way.”

Elder Pamela Robertson of Serenity Apostolic Hub shared her thoughts, “What comes from the heart reaches the heart. We were willing to go out and help others who were in need.”

Pastor Bernett Messenger of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church also shared, “We were more than happy and glad to participate in this beautiful effort. What touched me the most is that God placed it on the hearts of the residents. He can use anybody. Being able to help and give, that is what our mission is about.”
