Walley Report: Protecting Life, Family, and Common Sense

Tennessee’s recent legislative efforts on healthcare reflect the careful balance we must strike between protecting vulnerable individuals and preserving essential medical freedoms. As a state senator, I supported two important bills that some may see as contradictory, but to me, they reflect a consistent belief in responsibility, parental involvement, preserving life, and protecting children.

In 2023, I voted for Senate Bill 1, which prohibits gender-transition procedures, including puberty blockers and hormone therapy, for minors. I believe we have a duty to protect children from making permanent, life-altering decisions before they are emotionally and physically mature. These procedures are irreversible and cause permanent damage to a child’s body. In Tennessee, I am proud to say we took a stand against these harmful practices to protect our children. As a legislator and a parent, I believe it is our duty to safeguard young people from ideology-driven medicine that prioritizes social trends over long-term health.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld SB 1, confirming that states have the authority to regulate gender transition medical care for minors. I stand by that law, and I believe it provides necessary safeguards during some of the most formative years of a young person’s life.

This year, I also proudly supported Senate Bill 449, which protects access to fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) , embryo preservation, and contraception. This legislation came in response to real fears that families in Tennessee could lose access to IVF after a controversial Alabama court ruling classified frozen embryos as children. We acted quickly and decisively to ensure that Tennesseans could continue to pursue their dreams of starting or growing a family without fear of legal uncertainty or government overreach.

Senate Bill 449 affirms the right of individuals to responsibly use fertility medicine and contraception without fear of overreach or litigation. IVF and other such services offer hope to so many, and I believe it’s our job as legislators to protect those hopes and the freedom to pursue them.

Protecting children and supporting families are not opposing goals, they go hand in hand. SB 1 ensures that minors are not subjected to irreversible procedures before they are fully mature, while SB 449 safeguards the ability of adults to access responsible, life-affirming care to build families. These laws reflect a consistent, conservative commitment to protecting the vulnerable and upholding the sanctity of life at every stage.

These two bills, SB 1 and SB 449, are united by one principle: the role of government is not to intrude on freedom, but to protect life, and create conditions where families can flourish. Children should not be experimental subjects for activist medicine. And families who value life should not face legal threats for wanting children.

I’m proud of the direction our state is taking. And as long as I serve, I’ll keep working to ensure Tennessee remains a place where life is cherished, truth is respected, and families can thrive without interference from activist agendas.
