SOC Children’s Mental Health Coalition Promotes Well-being Through Movie Series

The Hardeman County SOC Children’s Mental Health Coalition, advocating children and youth in the community, held a free screening of Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot, at the Luez Theatre on Sunday, August 24, 2025. The presentation was the second of the coalition’s three-part summer movie series, which was created to reach families in Hardeman County and focus on mental health care.

“The coalition was created with our mission to collaborate with community in efforts to promote the overall well-being of children and youth in Hardeman County,” said Bethany Miller, a member of the coalition. “We wanted to create opportunities for free movies for our community while we focus on mental health.”

The family-friendly summer movies series opened in July in Grand Junction where the Disney Pixar film Turning Red was shown.

“Some of the themes presented in the story included shame, self-acceptance, and emotional regulation. Our goal was to give our community opportunities to watch films that show how important our mental health is along with the various ways we can improve it. Key takeaways: improve awareness, educate, and bring information to our community,” said Ms. Miller.

Because the goal is to reach people in all areas of the county, the series moved to Bolivar on Sunday, August 24, 2025, where the Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot was shown at the Luez Theater. After the movie was shown, there was a short panel discussion with real people sharing their stories and various foster care agencies were available to answer questions.

The Hardeman County SOC Children’s Mental Health Coalition will close out its summer series in Whiteville with a free screening of the DreamWorks Animation film Home at the Whiteville Community Center on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at 3 p.m. This is the last movie of the summer movie series.
