Somerville Methodist Church Finishes Christmas Break at Luez Theater

It was a fun afternoon for the Somerville Methodist Church (SMC) Children and Youth group at the Luez Theater on Saturday, January 3, 2026, when they came to see the newly released “David” movie. The animated feature, which has been entertaining both children and adults since it opened, had a one-weekend showing at the Luez Theater drawing crowds on Friday night during its first showing as well as through the weekend during the matinee and evening Saturday performances.
“This movie was to end our Christmas Break,” said SMC Director of Children and Youth Ministries Kim Gist, who lives in Grand Valley Lakes. “We start back Wednesday evening activities on January 7, after school.”
Ms. Gist has attended SMC for 16 years and been actively involved as the director of church and youth ministries for four years. Along with offering activities for youth during school breaks, the church offers free and regular programming at its Christian Activity Center.
“We provide a safe place for open gym play, tutoring, snacks, and a youth hangout. Then at 5 p.m., we have Joyful Noise, our children’s choir lead by Amy Campbell. Practice is followed by dinner and Bible study,” said Ms. Gist, who shared the tie with the “David” movie. “The Joyful Noise Choir plans to use theme songs from “David” as part of its spring programming.”
Ms. Gist said SMC serves families across both Hardeman and Fayette Counties and noted some of the people who attended the movie with the church are from Hickory Valley and Whiteville. It was a special afternoon, which was enjoyed by all.
“What an amazing historical theatre to share this opportunity with the kids as we learn about David and his journey with God, our Creator. As Brother Don (pastor at Somerville Methodist Church) says, ‘Glory be to God’ and we are truly thankful,” said Angela, who is an SMC member.
“We loved the movie and theater. The staff is so sweet,” said SMC member Megan Ellard.
“We love having the Luez Theater. It is easy to coordinate the events with them for our group,” said Ms. Gist. “A big thank you to the Luez Theater!”
