The Hardeman County Ambulance Service (HCAS) recently recognized brothers Jonathan Swarey and Samuel Swarey for their “service of “unwavering dedication to their community” as first responders. Jonathan and Samuel, first responders in the Town of Whiteville, each received a certificate noting their years of service.

Jonathan and Samuel are volunteer first responders and have been serving in that capacity for 21 years. They started volunteering together and serve in Whiteville as fire fighters and medical first responders.

Last month, City of Bolivar Fire Chief Lynn Price noted at the First Responder Career Day, there is a “shortage of first responders” across the nation. The event was held to introduce eighth grade students to various first responder careers with the hope of “planting a seed”.

Jonathan volunteers with the City of Bolivar Fire Department, is the assistant fire chief in The Town of Whiteville, and also volunteers with Station 13 in Fayette County. He shared why he volunteers as a first responder.

“The reason I do it is first off, I thought it would be interesting to get into. Now, it is a passion. It is something I can’t imagine not doing,” said Jonathan. who is the assistant fire chief in Whiteville. “As long as I am in the community here, it feels like it is what I need to be doing.”

Jonathan shared his brother, Samuel, volunteers for many of the same reasons. For all the brothers do, the Hardeman County Ambulance Service expressed its appreciation “from the bottom of our hearts”!
