Tennessee Shakespeare Company to Perform The Tempest in La Grange

Tennessee Shakespeare Company’s (TSC) 7th Annual FREE Shout-Out Shakespeare Series is celebrating the 400th Anniversary of the printing of the First Folio, a collection of 36 plays published in 1623. The Company is excited to perform his last play, The Tempest, live on the grounds of Woodlawn Plantation as one of 10 venues this season in and around Shelby County. No reservations are required.

Directed by TSC Founder and Producing Artistic Director Dan McCleary, this 90-minute production of Shakespeare’s final romance features a 13-actor ensemble. The Series is generously sponsored by Evans Petree PC, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Shakespeare Fund of Theater League of Kansas City.

This play is considered Shakespeare’s farewell to the stage, written 1610-1611. He would die just five to six years later. During a period in which he pens a group of plays that we modernly define as “romances,” it might more accurately be described as a time of self- reckoning for the playwright: where the daughters and spirit world redeem the fathers, where revenge and violence give way to forgiveness and grace, and where our human age is finally acknowledged as terminal yet ethereal.

Woodlawn’s owner, Jule Eberlin, graciously offered the perfect spot in a shady grove on the front lawn. Visitors are encouraged to bring folding chairs and blankets. Parking will be directed to the back of the property. It will be a picnic-like atmosphere with a bake sale and beverages sold by Senior Task Force. Restrooms will be available.

The production will be held Saturday, October 7, 2023 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Woodlawn is located at 24545 Highway 57 in La Grange, Tennessee, 38046.

Rain location will be at the La Grange Civic Center.

Donations are welcome for the Tennessee Shakespeare Company.
