The City of Middleton Honors its Military Veterans
The Middleton American Legion Post 198 held a Veterans Day ceremony on Friday, November 11, 2022, to honor and acknowledge the veterans (past and present) from Hardeman County who served in all service branches, with or without wartime service.
The ceremony has been held in Middleton for 22 years and it is one that is well attended by veterans, their family, and friends in the community.
“There were more than 70 people in the area during the service and others who stood away but were part of the service. There was also a wide range of ages of people who participated this year,” said Middleton Alderman Ann Baxter.
There were several branches of service represented that included the Army, Coast Guard, Marines, and Navy.
“We recognized all services regardless of wartime,” said Baxter. “A veteran is someone who has served in any branch of the United States of America services.”
The program included Commander Eugene Mathis with American Legion Post 198 starting the ceremony and Pastor Blaine Dyess led the opening prayer. Judy Morphis sang the National Anthem and God Bless America, and Post 198 placed the wreath of the Unknown Soldier. Noah Seever and Alex Tovar with the Middleton High School Band played Taps. Dr. Gary Efner led the closing prayer.
Hardeman County Mayor Todd Pulse was the keynote speaker and offered gratitude, and shared his great respect for all the veterans. Other county officials in attendance were Middleton Mayor Evan Mott and the Town of Whiteville Mayor Gene Bowden who is a native of Middleton.
After the ceremony, the Middleton Civitan Club provided hotdogs, chips, and drinks for everyone. Attendees spent some time visiting with each other, and many of the veterans swapped military stories.
