Three-Month Sales Tax Holiday on Food Will Help Ease Rising Grocery Bills

By State Senator Page Walley

I hope many citizens took advantage of last weekend’s sales tax holiday on back-to-school items to help families, students, and teachers prepare for the new school year. August kicks off a three-month long sales tax holiday. From August 1, 2023, to October 31, 2023, food and food ingredients are exempt from sales tax in Tennessee.

We extended this sales tax holiday on food from one month last year to three months this year. Inflation is still an issue impacting the bottom line for Tennessee families and citizens, and weekly grocery bills remain at record high levels. This sales tax holiday is one way we can help provide some financial relief to Tennesseans.

From August to October the food and food ingredients that will be tax-free include liquid, concentrated, solid, frozen, dried, or dehydrated substances for consumption by humans. Food and food ingredients do not include alcoholic beverages, tobacco, candy, or dietary supplements. For more information on this sales tax holiday, visit the Tennessee Department of Revenue’s website.

In Tennessee, we take pride in being one of the lowest taxed states in the nation, and we will continue to look for ways to cut taxes for Tennesseans. Just this year, the General Assembly passed more than $400 million in tax savings for individuals and small businesses. It is important for Tennesseans to be able to keep more of their hard-earned money, and as your state senator, I am committed to keeping the tax burden in Tennessee low.

As always, it is an honor to serve as your state senator. Please reach out to me if I can assist you in any way at (615) 741-2368 or sen.page.walley@capitol.tn.gov.
