Town of Whiteville Holding Student Art Contest
The Town of Whiteville is holding an art contest for Whiteville Elementary School and Whiteville resident home school students in the first through eighth grades. Students are able to choose their own theme and must create an original piece that will be judged in one of two divisions that includes first through fourth grades and fifth through eighth grades.
The Tennessee Arts Commission awarded the Town of Whiteville two grants totaling $29,510 for its 2025 fiscal year that runs from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025. Town of Whiteville Mayor Gene Bowden shared his excitement and appreciation for the grants that will allow the Town of Whiteville to bring more arts to the community.
“What we really want to do is focus on the arts in our town, because they have been neglected for some time,” Mayor Bowden commented after receiving the grants. “We didn’t have anybody really interested in the arts or in pursuing the arts for our children and for our adults as well. So, this money is going to help us bring things to our town.”
Students from the Whiteville area are encouraged to participate in the art contest and are able to submit one piece. Judges are looking for creativity, and no offensive or political material will be allowed. Submissions must follow these guidelines:
- Use a 16 x 20 size poster or canvas.
- Art can be sketched (color pencils accepted) or painted.
- No logos and No words are allowed.
Art submissions are due to City Hall or the school representative, that will submit to City Hall on behalf of the student, along with a completed registration form by Monday, September 9, 2024.
A panel of three judges will select and notify winners. The winners will be announced at the 4th Annual Main Street Festival that will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2024. They will receive a Main St. Festival food voucher (must be redeemed during festival only), art supplies, and a $100 gift card.
All artwork will be displayed at the Whiteville Community Center, 151 East Main Street in Whiteville, from Tuesday, September 10, 2024, through Thursday, October 10, 2024.
