Town of Whiteville Meeting Includes Principal Gratitude, Street Repair Update, Upcoming Events

The Town of Whiteville board met for its monthly meeting on Monday, October 6, 2025, at City Hall. In attendance were Mayor Gene Bowden, and Town of Whiteville Board of Alderman Philip Forbes, Ocie Holmes, Jessie Giles, Ernest Pirtle, Mattie Polk-Nelson, Tommy Turner, and City Recorder Angelous Simmons.

  • Mayor Bowden noted there is a mutual agreement with Fayette County fore fire department aid. Whiteville is waiting Fayette County to sign its letter and return to continue the longstanding agreement.
  • Whiteville Elementary School (WES) Principal Casshawndra Sain addressed the board to express her appreciation for its support of the school.

“It is evident that you are invested and that you care about our scholars . . . I appreciate the supplies, the donations, the words of encouragement, but I want you to know the impact you made for two years straight with the free basketball skills camp,” said Ms. Sain, who also noted it has contributed to activity in physical engagement, education, and mentorship.

a. Norman Street Project

  • There was an assessment done on the area and work will be done on an extension with a rock fill in to the culvert.

b. City Street Repair

  • Want to be patient regarding paving, so work is not done and later have to be torn up. The waste water project is one the City hopes to near finish before paving roads.

  • Selling a 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe to the City of Grand Junction.

Whiteville Food Bank

  • The board approved a donation of $2,600.

  • Fire Chief Matthew Graber shared a report for the month and wanted to remind citizens fire permits are required from Wednesday, October 15, 2025, through Friday, May 15, 2026, when citizens are doing any burning on their property. A burn permit may be obtained online.
  • Lee Ola Roberts Library librarian Glenda Doyle share a report of the programs offered at the library. Also, noted the library will be closed on Thursday, October 23, 2025.

9) Notices/Meetings/Activities { minute mark in video}
a. Trunk or Treat will be held on Friday, October 31, 2025, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

b. Thanksgiving Luncheon will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at 12 p.m.

c. Downtown Christmas on Saturday, December 13, 2025, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

  • Alderwoman Mattie Polk-Nelson asked if it would ever be considered bringing a Christmas parade back to Whiteville. On Wednesday, the Town posed the question on its Facebook page for consideration. Let them know what you think!
