Town of Whiteville to Conduct Lead Water Testing

The Town of Whiteville will begin testing its water for lead in June 2025. The testing is routine and part of an ongoing effort by the Town of Whiteville to keep the water safe for its residents.

The fact water is being tested may cause some concern, but Matthew Harris, Town of Whiteville Water and Waste Water Supervisor assures residents not to be alarmed.

“Please don’t be alarmed. Our water system has consistently tested below action levels, and this testing is part of a routine, proactive approach to ensure continued safety. The purpose of the testing is to protect public health by minimizing lead (Pb) and copper (Cu) levels in drinking water. Lead and copper typically enter drinking water from the corrosion of plumbing materials, and this testing helps ensure our system remains safe and in compliance with federal regulations,” said Mr. Harris. “Because our previous results were well below the EPA action levels, we are now on a reduced monitoring schedule that requires fewer sampling locations.”

Testing will only be conducted in June and will consist of 10 sites. As required by the EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule, customers will collect the samples themselves from inside their homes. Mr. Harris noted this is a joint effort between the water system and selected participants. His department will coordinate directly with each participant to deliver the sampling kit and provide clear instructions. Arrangements will also be made for pickup of the completed sample.

“If lead is detected above the EPA action level, we will notify the resident immediately and provide recommendations to reduce exposure, such as using filters or flushing taps. The site will be prioritized for further investigation and possible corrective action,” said Mr. Harris.

Mr. Harris expects results from the test sites will be available within two to four weeks after samples are submitted to the lab, depending on processing time.

There are a limited number of test samples available on a first call, first serve basis. If you are a Whiteville resident and want to have your water tested, contact the Town of Whiteville at (731) 254-8523 to be added to the list.

“We appreciate the cooperation of the selected participants in helping us meet federal requirements and protect the health of our community,” said Mr. Harris.
