VFW Post 2949 Surpasses Expected Ticket Sales for Fish Fry Fundraiser

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2949 of Bolivar, Tennessee held a Fish Fry fundraiser on Saturday, April 12, 2025. Tickets went on sale before the event and by the time Saturday arrived, the Post had surpassed its minimum expectation of selling 120 tickets. Fortunately, the members were prepared and able to meet orders placed by people who came out to support VFW Post 2949.
“The day is going really great with the event. It has been an even flow since we started around 11 a.m. and we are happy with the turnout of people coming to support us,” said Post Commander James R. Shelton, who assumed the position in October 2024. “Also, people have been giving us donations, we appreciate that.”
Plates, which included fish, fries, slaw, white beans, hush puppies, and a drink were available with a pre-purchased ticket and for those who stopped by on the day of the event.
The VFW Post 2949 of Bolivar, Tennessee has operated since 1946. The purpose of the VFW is to support disabled and needy veterans, and their community. It currently has about 50 active members, which have come to be known as the “Fighting Tigers”, and is seeking to add more to the post. The money raised through fundraisers like the fish fry enables the post to manage general expenses, make improvements to the post location, and assist in its community efforts.
“[The money raised] is for our budget money we need money to pay our bills and keep the lights on. We feel like we are at a crossroads right now hoping to gain some new members and this is going to help us help the community,” said Commander Shelton, who wanted to thank people who donated to the new roof the post has been able to purchase. “We have been helping Grand Junction with water. We want the community to know we are here, and we want the veterans in the community to find out what their benefits are and take advantage of those benefits. They deserve it!”
The VFW Post 2949 of Bolivar, Tennessee meets every third Thursday of the month. The next monthly meeting will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. All the veterans are invited to attend.
