Whiteville Alderman Approve Temporary Saturday Library Hours

Lee Ola Roberts Library Director Glenda Doyle requests the Whiteville Alderman to approve temporary Saturday hours.

The Town of Whiteville met for its monthly meeting on Tuesday, January 2, 2024. Mayor Gene Bowden, City Recorder Angelous Simmons, and Alderman Deborah Burkeen, Jessie Giles, Ocie Holmes, Ernest Pirtle, and Tommy Turner were present. Alderman Jimmie Lee Robertson was absent. The board approved the reading of the minutes from the December 2023 meeting.

There was no formal Communication from the Mayor. The new public comment protocol established at the December 2023 meeting was enforced, and since there was no one who completed a request form, there were no public comments from citizens. Mayor Bowden did share there was a citizen comment that was resolved before the meeting.

  • The first reading of the Industrial Board bylaws was approved.

  • Utility adjustment and charge offs, motion carried.
  • Pay invoices for December 1 – 21, 2023, motion carried.

Reports from Officers, Staff, and Board Members

  • Police Chief Ben Davis reported it was a good holiday and there were no incidents. Aeneas installed the new telephone system. {Watch at 8:30 minute mark in the video to see all covered.}
  • Library Director Glenda Doyle reported 11 children and a total of 21 people attended the Cookies with Santa Claus. The library conducted a survey to determine the needs of the community as it makes long-range plans. The surveys were available at City Hall and the Post Office. Ms. Doyle shared the community wants computer training and Saturday hours. Although computer training has not had a good response in the past, Ms. Doyle is willing to offer it again to the library patrons. Per Ms. Doyle’s request, the board approved the library being temporarily open one Saturday a month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for three months. After that time, Ms. Doyle will present a status report of community use to the board. Saturday, February 3, 2024, which is also Take Your Child to the Library Day, will start the three-month trial.   • City Recorder Angelous Simmons gave an update regarding the survey responses from Whiteville Elementary School. Top requests included basketball, and music and movies at the park. {Watch at 16:45 minute mark in the video to see all covered.}
  • Alderman Jessie Giles noted recent vehicle thefts on Jackson Street. {Watch at 17:36 minute mark in the video to see all covered.}

The meeting was adjourned. The next Town of Whiteville meeting will be held on Monday, February 5, 2024.
