Carriage House Coffee Opens Second Shop in Bolivar

Carriage House Coffee opened its doors to Hardeman County early Monday morning on April 3, 2023, to a community that has long been awaiting the presence of a coffee shop in Downtown Bolivar. The coffee house is located at 107 West Market Street in Bolivar, which previously housed Hatchie River Trading Company.

The Bolivar site is the second location following the original one, which was opened in Byhalia, Mississippi in October 2021. Daughter and father team, Emma and Todd Maxwell, co-own the business and manage it together. They were both busy at the espresso machine as a steady flow of customers came in to celebrate the grand opening with a ribbon cutting provided by the Hardeman County Chamber of Commerce.

Several people from the community, Hardeman County Mayor Todd Pulse and Byhalia Mayor Debby Weathers, and friends of the Maxwells, were on hand to help them celebrate the opening of the new Carriage House Coffee shop at the ribbon cutting.

“We are excited for them and hope Bolivar supports this hometown coffee shop to flourish,” said Bolivar’s Community Development and Tourism Director Dylan Hill who went on to share comments he has heard from citizens in Bolivar. “I read the other day people commenting, ‘look at our little downtown . . . coffee shop, grocery store, nutrition shop, theater, gym . . . all of this right here in our little, small downtown.’ It just shows, if you come down here and look, there is more going on than people think. We get a bad wrap that all of the buildings are empty, but it does take time. There are a lot of people working to better that and I think this is just a great example of what can be and what is coming.”

Bernice Lofties, who admitted to being a coffee lover, could not decide on just one drink, so she chose two.

“I had a caramel frappé and a mocha macchiato, which were very delicious,” said Lofties. “I’m so excited to have our city’s very own gourmet coffee shop in town. The atmosphere was very peaceful and inviting. I will definitely be back!”

Customers coming back is what Emma Maxwell hopes continues to happen.

“I want to thank the town in general for letting us come in and do this. I really hope to bring more people to the square and grow the city more. I want to bring good coffee to good customers,” said Ms. Maxwell.
