School Board Prepares to Start $4 Million Dollar Renovation Project
The Hardeman County Commission approved a request from the Hardeman County Board of Education to transfer $4,000,000 (four million dollars) of the school board’s unassigned fund balance to the Education Capital Projects Fund. The funds will be used to begin much needed renovations and improvements at various county schools.
“Early last year, I went with every principal and walked every building and I came back and compiled a list. When I got back, that list was a lot more extensive than what I thought it would be on things that we needed to work on,” commented Director of Schools Dr. Christy Smith.
In January, The school board members accompanied Dr. Smith on visits to every school in the district. They observed flooring needs, water damage repairs, and restroom renovations amongst some of the work needed.
The Board explored its options and approved the transfer of funds at its April meeting {watch the April school board meeting here}. The renovations are expected to take three to five years to complete.
The School Board funds are separate from the County’s funds, but the Board of Education budget must be approved by the School Board and by the County Commission.
