If you have not already shopped at the one of the counties local farmers markets, August 7 – 13 is the perfect time to head out to shop local and fresh during National Farmers Market Week.

Farmers markets provide many communities the opportunity for residents to purchase fresh produce directly from the farmer/grower that often has been grown in the local community. They are also a great local resource for others who do not have immediate access to grocery stores for those items.

Johnathon Harris sells vegetables to a child spending her POP Bucks on fresh produce.

“Our closest grocery store is roughly 15 – 20 miles away,” said Jonathon Harris, who manages the Grand Junction market.

Most vendors grow and bring their own items to sell. Some of the produce sold at the Grand Junction Farmers Market, located at the Lafayette Gin, are ones Harris purchases from growers and brings back to sell,

“That is my way of providing a service to our community.”

Shoppers can expect to find more than tomatoes at the county farmers markets. Some of the produce sold include cucumbers, corn, potatoes, greens, and peppers, as well as homemade baked goods, and jams and jellies. Artists and businesses have also sold personal care items, handmade arts and crafts, and more.

“It’s important for us to have our farmers market in Grand Junction, so we can provide healthy alternatives to our community, and encourage our community members to live a healthier lifestyle,” said Harris. “
