Sandra Wooddell Harris Shines Again for Hatchie Chapter TSDAR

Hatchie Chapter TSDAR (Tennessee Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution) is proud to announce that our own Sandra Wooddell Harris has again placed in the National DAR American Heritage competition. Her entry, Genealogy is Power, in the Art and Sculpture – Acrylic Contest, placed second. Creating her beautiful painting was only one part of the competition. She was also obliged to compose a description of her piece; her words exactly encapsulate the inspiration each DAR member carries in her heart.
An excerpt follows:
“Patriots like George Washington gave us a foundation of leadership and freedom. George also recognized the power and privilege in knowing one’s family history. He corresponded in the 1790s with a prominent genealogist and wrote his lineage on a scrap of paper for the same reason we do. In George’s day, the male lineages were legal documents that judges used to prove inheritances. Properties would be inherited from male to male. Male lineages were more significant than females. That explains why a woman’s line is so hard to trace! Genealogy does not discriminate against sex, race or religion. You have the freedom to pursue your lineage, the power to honor your heritage, and the privilege to discover who you are through your inherited genes. Genealogy makes us all equal and proud of our ancestor’s contributions in history. Paternal & Maternal!”
One can see an actual reproduction of that scrap of paper in Ms. Harris’ painting along with other symbols of the United States of American, which include the Stars and Stripes and the American Bald Eagle. The picture is presented here held by the artist. Congratulations Sandra! You continue to inspire us to reach back to our ancestors.
