Former Teacher, Now Real Estate Agent Creates Scholarship for Students

Karen Lanier retired in December 2023 from teaching in the Hardeman County Schools after a 30-year career. Although she has found success as a real estate agent, her passion for helping students succeed has transformed into the launch of the Lanier Realty Scholarship.
“As a former teacher and now a local real estate agent, I know how important it is to never stop learning,” said Ms. Lanier, who wants to make a difference for some deserving students. “We’ll be awarding two $500 scholarships. My heart is in Hardeman County, but our business spans across many West Tennessee and North Mississippi communities—and we want to support students in all the areas our team proudly serves.”
The Lanier Realty Scholarship will award one $500 scholarship to a high school senior at Bolivar Central High School or Middleton High School. A second $500 scholarship will be awarded to a current college student from the counties it serves, which include Fayette, Hardeman, Hardin, Madison (TN), McNairy, or Tippah and Alcorn (MS). Applicants are asked to write a 400 to 500 word essay using one of the following writing prompts:
- How do you plan to make a positive impact in your community after graduation?
- What’s a life lesson you’ve learned during school that will shape your future?
- Tell us about a teacher, coach, family member or mentor who changed your life.
Students may apply through Thursday, May 1, 2025, which is the deadline.
