Obituary: Madison J. Jackson

Madison J. Jackson ~ April 15, 1928 — December 11, 2025
(age 97)

Madison J. Jackson was a unique man. Raised in Middleton, Tennessee, he later made his home in Memphis. He was youngest son of a very large family. He had a strong sense of family loyalty. He worked hard to provide for his family both parents and children. Madison had an inquisitive mind that allowed him to figure out ways to accomplish most all of the tasks he set his mind to, commonly thinking to himself, “I think I could probably do that” when it came to tasks like building, woodworking, roofing, and even bricklaying.

He enjoyed good music, food and movies (especially westerns) and took great pleasure in watching sports and his favorite teams. Madison was an expert hunter and fisherman and an avid jigsaw puzzler. He was a quiet man, but worth knowing and treated people the way he wanted to be treated.

Madison or “Pop” as he was called by family and “Gunn” by his friends was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise, and later his second wife, Mary, both of whom he cared for until the end of their lives. He was also preceded in death by his son, Ricky; daughter-in-law, Jo; and daughter-in-law, Leigh.

He is survived by his son, Gerald; his daughter in law’s family, Betsy, Wes, and Jeni; grandson, Jeremy; and his grandson’s fiancée, Mary. Madison is also mourned by many friends who loved him including his adopted granddaughter and friend, Jenny.

Services will be at Shackelford Funeral Directors, Middleton on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. Visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. until service time. Internment will be at the City Cemetery.
