Don’t Make a Rookie Gardening Mistake, Wait for the Fayette Cares Plant Sale on April 11

Shoppers like Fernando (left) and Flor Limaco return each spring to browse thousands of flowers, herbs, and vegetables at the Fayette Cares Plant Sale, April 11 at Oakland Elementary.

Every spring, it happens. The first warm weekend arrives, gardeners get excited, and carts fill with plants that look irresistible in the sunshine. Then West Tennessee does what West Tennessee does … one last cold snap rolls through, and those eager early plantings become an expensive lesson.

That’s why the Fayette Cares Charity Plant Sale, happening Saturday, April 11, 2026, at Oakland Elementary School, is perfectly timed. By then, planting conditions are far more forgiving, meaning your garden investment is much more likely to thrive instead of shiver. In other words: plant smarter, not twice.

The sale has grown into one of the region’s largest community plant events, offering nearly 10,000 plants, including flowers, vegetables, herbs, fruits, and an especially popular “homegrown” section filled with plants donated and propagated by local gardeners.

But the event’s roots are humble. Forty years ago, when Fayette Cares was just beginning its work serving neighbors facing homelessness, domestic violence, and food insecurity, one of the organization’s very first fundraisers was a tiny plant sale made possible by neighbors digging up and sharing plants from their own gardens.

What started with a handful of donated hostas and irises has now blossomed into a beloved annual tradition.

And speaking of digging, now is actually the perfect time to head into the garden and thin out perennials. Dividing plants like hostas, daylilies, irises, and ornamental grasses helps them grow healthier and stronger while preventing overcrowding. It’s a win for your garden and a gift that helps someone’s life flourish.

Those extra plants can be donated to the Fayette Cares sale, where volunteers will pot them and prepare them for new homes across the county. Every plant purchased helps support the Fayette Cares mission to provide shelter, food, and support services for families facing crisis.

So before you rush out and plant too early, take a breath, mark your calendar, and plan to dig in at the Fayette Cares Plant Sale. Your garden will thank you. And so will your community.
