Extension Month Employee Spotlight: Rachel Howell Serving Hardeman County

March is celebrated as Extension Month, a time to recognize the work of Extension professionals who provide research-based education and outreach to communities across Tennessee. In Hardeman County, one of those dedicated professionals is Rachel Howell.
Rachel Howell serves as the Tennessee State University (TSU) Horticulture Extension Agent III for Hardeman County and also coordinates the county’s Master Gardener program. With 18 years of experience in Extension, Howell has spent nearly two decades helping residents learn more about gardening, landscaping, and horticulture.
Through workshops, classes, community programs, and one-on-one assistance, Howell works with residents of all ages to help them successfully grow gardens and improve their landscapes. She also leads and supports the Hardeman County Master Gardener program, which engages trained volunteers in educational outreach and community service projects.
Howell says one of the things she enjoys most about working in Hardeman County is the opportunity to connect with local residents and help them succeed in their gardening efforts.
“I enjoy working with the people in our community and helping them learn how to grow and care for their gardens and landscapes,” Howell said.
She also wants residents to know that Extension offers a wide range of programs for the entire family. From youth development programs to agriculture, family and consumer sciences, and horticulture education, Extension provides resources and opportunities for people at every stage of life.
Another reason Howell enjoys her role with Extension is that no two days are ever the same.
“Every day brings something different and the opportunity to meet new people while serving the community,” she said.
The UT–TSU Extension Office in Hardeman County continues to provide educational programs, resources, and support to help local residents improve their homes, farms, and communities.
