Obituary: Janie M. Overton

Janie M. Overton, a beloved lifelong resident of Hardeman County, Tennessee, passed peacefully at her home in Bolivar on May 24, 2026. Born on October 29, 1956, in Bolivar, Janie’s life was a testament to devotion—to her family, her community, and her faith.
Before becoming disabled, Janie was known for her dedication behind the wheel as a bus driver for the Madison County school district, a role she held with pride and care for many children’s safety and well-being. Her earlier years saw her contribute to the local economy through her work at the Brown Shoe Company, including her time at the Brown Shoe plant in Selmer, where she was a valued member of the workforce.
Janie’s passions extended beyond her career into the vibrant fabric of her daily life. She delighted in reading, cherishing moments with her grandchildren and family, and bringing to life the delicate art of painting figurines. Equally dear to her heart was her fellowship with her church family; she counted herself a dedicated member of Abundant Life Christian Fellowship Church in Hornsby. Through every season of her life, Janie epitomized warmth and a generous spirit, spending her days enveloped in the love of those around her.
Family was the cornerstone of Janie’s world. She is survived by her children: April Overton of Jackson; Amy Cleek and her husband Andy of Middleton; and Brian Overton of Bolivar. Her legacy of love continues through her cherished grandchildren, Jeremy and Colton Cleek and Jonathan Overton, who brought her boundless joy and pride. Janie also leaves behind her sisters, Jewell Horner of Dyersburg and Linda Goodrum of Hornsby, and her mother-in-law, Faye Overton of Bolivar, whose bond with Janie was one of deep affection. She also leaves behind a brother-in-law, Greg Overton (Sheila) and sister-in-law, Sandra Richie all of Bolivar.
Janie was preceded in death by her father, Clarence B. Goodrum, Sr., her mother, Mildred Sanders Goodrum, her husband, Rickey Overton, her sister, Janet Stack, and her brother, Clarence B. Goodrum, Jr, her father-in-law, M.E. Overton, and two brothers-in-law, James Stack and Jim Horner. Their memories remain a quiet strength in the hearts of all who knew her.
