The Bolivar-Hardeman County Library wrapped up a successful dinosaur-themed summer reading program on July 31st with a celebration of reading and an awards ceremony.

The summer reading program kicked off on June 5th with an outdoor summer reading festival featuring a variety of activities and booths, including registration, a “dino” nail salon, a temporary tattoo parlor, and several games. Special guests included Healthy Families: First Five Initiative, SaferTN, and the Hardeman County Health Department. More than 70 readers registered for the program.

Throughout the summer, those 70 registered readers were encouraged to track their reading on a provided reading log to compete for the grand prize. In addition, readers were invited back to the library each week to participate in themed programs, including a Dino Hunt, Fossil Dig, dinosaur storytimes, dinosaur movies every Wednesday, and several more events.

Readers were divided into three categories, and the winners were announced at the awards ceremony. For the Early Literacy division, third place was awarded to Phoebe Harris (254 pages), second place was awarded to Wylder Estes (2,558 pages), and first place was awarded to Avery Hazlerig (2,758 pages). For the children’s division, third place was awarded to Maya Taylor (2,926 pages), second place was awarded to Trevor Hazlerig (2,970 pages), and first place was awarded to Mollie Estes (3,053 pages). For the youth division, Adeline Estes came in third place (2,019 pages), Hannah Gibson came in second place (3,083 pages), and Cassie Pulse received first place (3,691 pages).

The staff also held a friendly reading competition, with the newest part-time library assistant, Tony Gonzales, coming in first place with a total of 8,534 pages read in June and July.

Program attendance was encouraged by a drawing for a family package of tickets generously donated to the library’s summer reading program by the Discovery Park of America. For each program a reader attended, their names were entered for the drawing. The Hazlerig family were the lucky winners of the drawing.

The summer reading program, including all the events apart of it, is free for everyone. Having a library card is encouraged, but not required for program attendance. Next year, the theme for the summer reading program is “Mysteries Await at Your Library.”  However, the library has fun programs all year long! Check their calendar on the website for more information.
