CoreCivic Issues Statement Following Two Deaths at Whiteville Facility

Two deaths have been recently reported at a CoreCivic correctional facility in Whiteville, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the incidents.

CoreCivic, the private corrections company that operates the facility, has issued a statement addressing the deaths.

A spokesperson for CoreCivic provided the following statement:

At approximately 2:50 p.m. local time on Saturday, October 17, 2026, facility staff at the Whiteville Correctional Facility responded to an inmate experiencing a medical emergency in his cell. Facility medical staff administered lifesaving measures until EMS responders arrived and transported the inmate to Bolivar General Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. A cause of death has not been determined. Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) officials were notified of the incident and are investigating the death with full cooperation from facility staff.

An unrelated death involving a Whiteville inmate occurred on Friday, October 16th, at the Bolivar General Hospital and is believed to be from natural causes. The inmate had been hospitalized since October 12 for treatment of existing medical conditions. TDOC officials were also notified of this death.
